No joke. Let’s say your boyf., or girlf. comes over at your home or a new boss, and if your pet barks…… or if your pet simply adores him/her….. Your thoughts. Are your pets always right at discerning a good person right away?

I think they do…
My dogs growl at certain ppl no matter what age race or sex they are.. and some ppl they just simply look at and wag their tail..
Joe
yes, my boxer is the sweetest dog in the world, but she will growl only at the people that i don’t like.
Lewis
Yes, mine can also tell if I don’t like the person. and won’t let them near the house.

To a certain extent, maybe this has proved to be the case for some… but in general, I would say no. There have been many instances of a dog being friendly to a person who ends up robbing their owner, or a dog who is aggressive to a person who really means well.
Don’t let your dog judge a person’s character — a dog’s mind is affected by different things. A dog might “adore” a certain person because they have a cookie in their pocket, or they might bark because they smell cat on the person.

Most definately!!! My Lhasa hates this guy next door that he will never accept and would love to kill but then the guy across the way comes over for something to do yard work and the dog is so happy and warm to him. Mind you, the man next door never did anything to my dog but my dog chases and barks at him and tries to bite him thru the fence. It is so odd

. It may seem so, but dogs will not trust anyone who is different..such as a different color, or different scent, people that have a different diet because of culture, or even an someone with an illness will make them distrust a person and bark or growl.
They DO notice a threat, from posture or scent, but it doens’t mean that any person they distrust is bad..
One of my dogs always barked and growled at my Mom! He loved everyone else, but got upset every time she visted..and she is very nice…lol

Yes I believe so. Animals know all!

We have 2 Rotties, most anyone can come through our door and they are welcomed by these dogs as long as we are in the area! If I speak to these people in a tone my dogs are use to hearing all is cool, but on another note if they detect a change in my voice or actions even if they did come through our door and were welcome the female will back away from them and growl..Oddly enough they do see and detect things we don’t and my female DOES NOT like white haired people! Or should I say she doesn’t like my 2 neighbors which are white haired she freaks out,and believe this or not but I just recently found out that these 2 are BAD people!! So to answer your question,I think they can tell..If your dog barks or is stand offish toward certain people..Maybe you should be too!
Katherine
they sure can, they are like small children! they may get to be a bit agressive towards the person. but i think that if they are just ignoring them that they just couldnt be bothered with that person in perticular!
Marion
i totally beleive that…if my dog doesnt like someone i dont trust them..he likes most people but if he doesnt, hes usually right. i also think they know if somebody likes them or not,

I own a Japanese Akita (American Version)
He is awesome. Akita’s have a natural instinct that tells them who is friend and who is foe. You should watch them as they really think about the situation at hand. You can litteraly see their brain working as they sum up the situation. Once they decide a person is a threat they become very tense and start with a growl that would scare anyone. I know my dogs growl scares me and I own him! Then if they consider a threat to be serious they growl and bark and push forward. These dogs do not have a reverse gear when in defense mode. They will not allow the threat anywhere near you and if the intruder/threat does not back away they will attack without hesitation. These dogs however really think about the threat before deciding on the action required. My dog has personally defended me twice. Both times he just growled and barked - Both times the threat froze still and they would not move a muscle. Very good to know he will defend me as when required. He is awesome at home aswell. Whenever we go to the front door he comes with us and sits by our side. Great protection for my wife. He just sits there and his prescence alone ensures their is not funny business. He is massive and looks mean as can be. The comments we get are:
Wow - Don’t let him eat me! Okay - keep that dog back!
That’s one scary looking dog.
Best guard dog in the world should be one that stops a possible threat before it even happens. Who would want to go against a dog that has taken out bears in it’s past.
